About this property

Funny Farm "For Whom the Bed Tolls"

We took an old retirement home (not the quaint type) and made it livable. With all the extra space we decided to offer it to travelers and vacationers. This space is a studio with an eating area, a nice private garden deck. The best part is the king bed, with a luxury 4 inch real feather bed topper . We originally called it the funny farm not only to honor the crazy old people who used to live here, but because we have a menagerie of pets that include chickens, potbelly pig, and a turkey. We aimed to make a comfortable, easy going, and eclectic interesting style. we are always evolving and adding new things to make for a memorable visit!.

We are 2.4 miles from the historic center, and about the same to the nearest beach. We live at the property, so we are available for any needs. Mostly advice on secret free parking areas, the authentic good restaurants, etc.

This is Florida, there are bugs, palmetto bugs look like giant cockroaches you may see one. We try to balance with our pest control people keeping the pests away and not spraying tons of toxic chemicals all over.

A comfortable and unique place to stay
We had a wonderful time in St Augustine and enjoyed Funny Farm. It was very comfortable and well-stocked. As advertised, it's an older building so folks need to keep that in mind. For budget conscious lodging, we thought it was homey and pleasant. Friends rented the unit next door for two nights and were also very happy.

The owners of this property are very nice people, but their cottage is not ready to qualify as a legitimate B&B. First, our arrival took them by surprise; they hadn't realized the cottage was booked: bed wasn't made; nothing had been dusted; floors not vacuumed or mopped; not even an extra roll of toilet paper. We didn't even bother looking for a refrigerator, microwave, or coffeemaker. Comfortable bed but the bathroom floor is a cave-in waiting to happen. Big, ugly, chunky putty all around the shower stall where it obviously flooded, probably more than once. The room was not heated (temp in the lower 40s that night), and when we tried to use the portable heater they provided, it kept short-circuiting the power. We had to call the owners three times in the middle of the night to restore the breaker. We finally just gave up and slept without heat the rest of the night. Got up early the next morning and left, not willing to stay the second night of our planned trip. Bottom line, don't stay here. And we believe a refund is in order.

Our first date was to St Augustine and now we live here, and we love it. Shelly a native Floridian is a lifelong teacher currently working with special needs blind children. Michael have lived and traveled in many many places keeps busy with renovations, tile and stone work, and Art to list a few.

Why they chose this property

we stumbled upon this place, which was in very poor shape and still is depending on your perspective. It was an old retirement home and was divided up weirdly. We set it up and it seems to work. we try to keep things fun and interesting and original. we are always working on something..... since beginning this operation which at first included awesome breakfasts what we have enjoyed most is meeting the variety of amazing people who come stay. Since we both have real jobs(at least shelly does) we are not dependent on this project to live, so we can keep it affordable and reinvest in making it a special place. we are flexible and down to earth, Karens and uptight types of people should somewhere else....we love life!
