Terrible! Very disappoiting! We paid for thee nights but went home after only one...
We (a family of four) booked a retro caravan for three nights at Hampton Bay Park, Herne Bay (#1774845).
But only ten days before our arrival (beyond our cancellation date) a certain 'Sarah' emailed us that she suddenly no longer collaborated with Hampton Bay. No reason was given. She wrote us that we had to move to Nethergong camping near Canterbury. She gave us only one option: a retro caravan for THREE people. The fourth of us had to sleep in a small tent.
Because we couldn't go anywhere else anymore, we went to Nethergong. The tent wasn't provided yet...
There was a tap in te caravan but NO running water, there were sockets but there was NO power, there was NO oven, and the hob was not working! This was not what we had booked! Sarah didn't show up, so we couldn't complain about the situation.
In fact, this caravan was nothing more than a hard shell tent without any comfort. That's why we left after just one night which was, sadly, an early end of our holiday.
The earlier reviews here were possibly written when the caravans were still at Hampton Bay, but now they're not worth your money anymore!
The owners of the Nethergong camping were helpful (they offered the beds in an other caravan) but it still was a very disappointing experience!
As you can understand, we'd like to have a refund.
We have had very good experiences with Home Away in the past, but this really was a let down...
Thank you for reading our story...
Van Laar family, the Netherlands
Luke and guests were fully informed in advance of the change of location (which actually is a much better campsite), which we offered at the same price.
We informed that the vintage caravan did only sleep 3 people and could provide a tent if required, also the option to cancel and a refunded was also offered, this request was declined.
On the visit one additional vintage caravan was also provided by us to the group (this was left in a very disgusting state) and was a disgrace.
The weather unfortunately was wet and windy which obviously led to the guests leaving not the lack of beds.
I would not recommend this guest and family to any other properties especially due to the disgusting state the additional vintage caravan was left in.
Great for a weekend - small but pretty
We had a lovely couple of nights in the caravan and our four year old daughter thought it was all one big adventure! Thankfully the weather was good as it is rather small inside, but we had a good set-up with chairs and a picnic table outside - all provided with the caravan.
The interior is all retro in style with a comfortable double bed and single bench. The bedding is cosy - duvets and good pillows. We had a couple of issues namely the double bed's middle board kept slipping and the corkscrew was missing(!) but the owner came round to sort it out for us. We did later find that there was no chopping board or sharp knife, but didn't need to get in touch with the owners again but I feel sure that he would have come round.
The campsite was clean, well run and the owners were friendly and helpful. The position of the site is convenient for both Whitstable and Herne Bay and the cycle track in both directions was perfect for our daughter - easy and flat.
The caravan and the site are great for a short break with a difference.
Fun, novelty weekend
We booked last minute and had a fun time overall. We stayed in Annabelle who was set up & waiting for us at the Hampton Bay Park campsite. She was everything we hoped she'd be. Really cute & chintzy with lots of lovely Cath Kidson accessories. The only slight criticism was that the bed kept collapsing - funny the first time but wore thin. The middle partition needs some attention. Also, could be helpful to have a few more instructions on the cooker etc and to let us know the fridge doesn't work. But hey - small things - as we did have fun. The weather was fab for us. The campsite is a half hour stroll into Herne Bay which is your quintessential English resort. Only 2 temperamental showers (light kept going off, water pressure dodgy and ran cold and then scalding). But very clean, friendly little site. Great for a mini break. Loved it so much overall that we're thinking of buying our own vintage caravan.
Brilliant accomodation Brilliant staff Brilliant activities available!
From the summary, you can see that our stay has be gorgeous. The advertising says it all. The only criticism is that the fridge available is in the site bathroom cabin area/hall and not in the actualy caravan. I suggest a cooler to be brought along to keep cold drinks nearby due to this. Electric sockets are available and power extensions are advisable. There was a lot of storage spaces in the caravan and the kitchen was just right for its purpose although we did bring bbq equipment anyway.
The fellow campers and staff have been very friendly, Barry and Leslie, thanks for the welcoming atmosphere. And the owner, Andy, has been responsive to any questions.
The area is just behind the beach bay and broadstairs/joss bay just approximately 30min away for beaches and water sports fun!
Nice break away
Nice, cosy and clean our 4 year old thought it was great fun. We stayed in mable. Owner and campsite owner helpful and friendly. Everything you need, although matches or a gas lighter in the caravan would be useful, but luckily we bought our own. Campsite in Herne Bay was quiet but close to both herne bay and Whitstable. Good bus link just up the road.
As described the caravan is retro so some surfaces around hob were a bit well used, and damaged laminate as it is original. Fabric upholstery and bedding all clean. Thank you
Childhood Holidays Revision
The caravan is beautifully decorated, impeccably clean throughout and perfectly kitted out with everything required for cooking, eating and sleeping warm and cosy. I wanted my holiday to have a camping feel from the 70 ' when I was born, but with some modern bits such as electricity. More than happy to go without TV & WI-FI, which gave my son & I the opportunity to play chess and other board games, which we seldom get to play at home with the Internet around. If you're up for lots of walking then this is perfect for you because the nearest beach, pub and shop are a fairly long walk away from where the caravan is currently located at Hampton Bay Park. So if you want more to do and things to be closet then the owners of the caravan can arrange for to be moved. I'm hindsight I wish I had done this. However the owners of the site; Barry & Lesley try their hardest to keep the toilets and showers (currently 1 for Gents & 1 for Ladies, but these are being extended) unfortunately other holiday makers spoil these facilities for others and they were left dirty for the next person, despite Lesley's numerous cleaning visits throughout the day. Hopefully this issue will be resolved with more facilities. It's a shame that others spoil the experience.
Whitstable and Herne Bay are pretty coastal seaside towns on the North Kent coast and they consist of boutique style shops, coffee shops, restaurants and local pubs and bars. Whitstable is famous for its local Oysters! Close road links for easy access from London and the South. The historical City of Canterbury, Turner Contemporary in Margate, Ramsgate harbour and Westwood Cross shopping centre are all within 15-30 minutes by car.
