Why Luis Alfonso Melendez chose Catedral
My father, Luis Alfonso, and his two sisters, Rosa and Isabel, spent their early childhood in Old San Juan. Their house was in the Caleta de las Monjas until their departure to France in the early 1970's. In 1985 their father, the late painter Alfonso Arana, returned to buy this house in Calle San Jose and it became the family home. It is a beautiful building with the patio on the ground floor and beautiful terraces upstairs. My grandfather used to call it 'his Palace'.... In 2009, my father and his siblings, decided to open the house for guests, and furnished the downstairs apartment for vacation rentals. My father lives on the 2nd and 3d floor of the house, my aunts reside in Massachusetts and in Connecticut. We love our Old San Juan home and hope you enjoy your stay there.

Bienvenidos, welcome to La Casa Arana! The open-air courtyard, typical of Spanish colonial architecture allows for breeze and light to come into the apartment. Since life blossoms in the tropics, we occasionally have visitors such as birds, coquis (Puerto Rico's symbolic frog that the island is famous for), lizards (harmless green anoles), and snails. Please remember that there are also less favorable visitors, such as mosquitoes. For your convenience, there are mosquito nets above your beds. These are delicate but will help protect you at night. As always, insect repellent is a daily necessity in the tropics. The courtyard is yours exclusively. Feel free to invite family and friends to visit. The house is very secure. We usually don’t close the front wooden doors as this allows fresh air to circulate. We also have ceiling and floor fans for your comfort… As an eco-friendly house, we are committed to conserving energy. Please remember to shut off lights and fans when not in use. And because food decomposes fast in warm weather, we ask that you please toss your trash daily. There are many green bins throughout the city. One is in the corner of San José and Sol - as you exit the house, on your left, at the corner. The city of San Juan has a new recycling program, please separate metal and plastic (no glass yet) and deposit in the recycle bin next to the green dumpsters at the corner of Sol and San José. We have Wifi internet access. The network is Linksys and the password is casaarana. We hope you enjoy your stay! Ideal for visiting Old San Juan!
Thank you, Luis, for the pleasant stay!! We enjoyed so much the green patio when we took our coffees and beers.
We did not stay at the property. We returned the keys 5 minutes after arrival. Unfortunately the apartment, while ample and with amenities as described in the listing, was musty and had a strong smell of mold. It appears that the apartment had been shuttered for a while. There appear to be no windows and the only ventilation seems to come from the doors leading to the courtyard. Opening the doors and operating the fans would not have been sufficient to eliminate the strong smell.
The owner chose to stick to his contract instead of offering a refund or at least the cleaning fee given that the apartment was left untouched.
Having said that the apartment is centrally located in a safe location.
a beautiful historic apartment in the heart of Old San Juan
La Casa Arana is a place like no other that I know of in Old San Juan. It has a historic past, architectural beauty, superb location. But it is also fully equipped with modern amenities (kitchen has everything you would need to prepare not just quick snacks but also complicated diners) and immaculately clean. Steps away from the iconic bars and restaurants, it is very private and quiet. Its plant filled internal courtyard provides a lovely oasis for both breakfasts one can linger over in the morning light and long dinners in the candlelight; with plenty of space to entertain guests. My daughter and I loved it for our 5 day stay in October and will certainly be coming back.
Epic Old San Juan
Staying here had a care-free feel. It has a ceiling fan, but no air conditioning. You can leave the doors of the bedroom open, if you wish, while you sleep. You can eat at the kitchen table or enjoy eating outside in the patio. This place is located in the center of it all. Most of the attractions in Old San Juan is a walking distance. I actually walked a couple of miles to the beach in Condado area. It was great to walk and sight-see at the same time. I took wonderful pictures on my way to the beach. The owner of the place is very friendly and is always available in case you have any questions. I would do it all over again!
Wonderful base for soaking in Old San Juan
The apartment is exactly as shown in photos/description. The best features - location, the owner (Luis Alfonso is a warm personality with great recommendations) and the architecture of the apt (gorgeous). The kitchen is simple but has everything needed to cook meals. The bedroom and bathroom area is beautiful with the arches, lots of art and access to the inner patio. It was fairly hot and humid during our stay (early July) so the ceiling and box fans came in handy to cool off a bit at night. We wanted to start our vacation in PR with a couple days in Old San Juan to soak it all in - the forts, the beautiful balcones, the brightly colored buildings.... this was a warm inviting base from which to explore the city. And it kicked off our vacation perfectly!
Historic Old San Juan Artist Apartment
A brief stay at Casa Arana was a beautiful experience!
Our apartment is on calle San José, the entryway of which is a gallery space of local artists. Around the corner you will find the Cathedral and the City Hall. It is one block from the main square Plaza de Armas, where you can find a supermarket and open air cafes, wonderful restaurants and bakeries. We are very near the 16th century fortress El Morro and a 20 minute walk to the Escambron Beach.
