About Mary Thombs
SunnyHill is a small family-run enterprise, owned and operated by Mary Thombs, with administrative assistance by her husband, Mr. George J. Robinson. Because George is a disabled veteran they rely on Denise Pinter as Property Mgr. She resides in the nearby hamlet of South Kortright. Denise occasionally greets guests & attends to their needs when Mary and/ior George are unavailable. Mary & George are committed to attracting and serving SunnyHill's guests as they would receive guests in their own home. Guests of all ages, and people of many interests have found SunnyHill welcoming and comfortable. Mary is a violin and voice teacher and church music director. George is a retired teacher. After early retirement due to disability, he founded a non-profit fine arts services organization. Evan, our son (16 yrs. old.) is, well, a 'nice kid,' and we love him lots.
Mary Thombs purchased this Cottage in 2010
Why Mary Thombs chose Hobart
The Stamford area is 'authentic' country (principally dairy country); most full-time residents are 'locals,' having lived in the area all their lives, and thus as guests travel about and meet SunnyHill's 'neighbors' they enjoy a true rural experience. Frankly, we wanted to avoid those manifestly inauthentic, touristy faux- 'country' places- and the inflated prices one finds in the lodging and stores there. E.g., when you have a delicious, reasonably-priced breakfast in Stamford's TP's Cafe, you'll see and hear farmers and tradesmen talking 'shop' and weather vs.seeing tourists inquiring about the address of the nearest aromatherapy practitioner or yoga studio. (Not, of course, that there is anything wrong with those activities, per se. However, it's just that - presumably - one doesn't drive upstate to the mountains for that kind of experience when it is available much closer to home, e.g., on St. Mark's Pl. on Manhattan's Lower East Side.) The beauty and variety of flora and fauna offered by SunnyHill's six acres (and scores of accessible surrounding undeveloped forested and pastured acres), and its proximity to four major ski centers were also compelling factors.
What makes this Cottage unique
One example of how SunnyHill is unique vis-a-vis other local whole-house rentals: besides offering six lovely acres of seclusion, our cottage is a classic 'A-Frame' building with, among other features, cathedral ceiling, lots of windows, a wood pellet stove and a sleeping loft with views. Compared to conventional divisive, 'white box' houses, SunnyHill's A-frame configuration feels different (which is what one wants when one goes away to get away); it's open, airy, and bright. The ground floor floor plan encourages free-flowing activities, conversation and air- the east-west orientation ensures cooling breezes while the sleeping loft offers cocoon-like coziness.

Wonderful stay. Very cozy and pleasant experience. Thank you Mary.
Everything was carefully outlined by Mary to enjoy their home and the surrounding areas. Loved it!
Need a place to stay for an event in Cooperstown. This cottage is quiet and clean. The loft is perfect for my 9 years old.
I absolutely loved staying at Sunnyhill Summit Retreat! We were there for my son's Cooperstown tournament and since my husband and son stayed in the barracks, I was alone in the cottage for 7 days with our family dog. I thought baseball would be the highlight of my trip but the serenity and relaxation I got all week at the cottage was wonderful. (And the drive to Cooperstown is about an hour away but it doesn't feel like it with the gorgeous views there.) The home is perfect for a small family and plenty spacious for just myself and my dog. Coffee in the mornings on the front patio were wonderful and one night I had a campfire going (plenty of firewood and kindling were provided). I barely watched TV but they have direct TV and WiFi along with a plethora of reading material about the area. It truly was a memorable week and the home and AMAZING views added to that.
Quiet an inspiring place.
Unfortunately I was not able to stay longer then a week. I really loved the place. It might not look grand from outside, but it’s a lot of space inside.
I had breakfast on the deck every morning. I had some fun with grill. Enjoyed the sun and watched birds and lots of other animals.
The Stamford is only 2hours hike away along a road with a wonderful views and farms.
I loved the library! Truly appreciated! I have been in Catskills for 7-8 times and only now I could say I know some of the history of the area. It’s great you have it! The atlas was fun to study and NY fishing guide was amazing to have.
House was clean. All the bedding and towels were provided. Kitchen is a little tiny, but there are two folding tables to add space. All kinds of dishes, utensils and tools were available.
Internet was working good all the time.
What else to say... I hope to come back again. It’s a bliss
Alona, you were a very special guest who was able to truly appreciate all that SunnyHill has to offer. We take pride in providing a personal touch for our guests, and it is especially gratifying when we are able to host someone like you. Thank you for being part of our “SunnyHill family!” W look forward to your next visit.
Beautiful cozy cabin with picturesque views
From the moment we arrived we were in our element. The cabin was pristine, cozy & warm. Watching the snow flurries outside from the comfort of the couch was so relaxing. George and Mary truly went above and beyond as hosts go make sure that our stay was nothing short of amazing. They gave us tons of information, potential activities, and places to eat. We explored the country roads, ate delicious food, and were able to come back to the cozy cabin in the woods to spend the night just soaking it all in. We loved it from the moment we arrived to the moment we left and made some wonderful memories we will hold onto in the years to come.
I went for quiet and I got it. A long weekend just hiding out. Good place for it.
Mary and I chose Sunny Hill's location in pastoral dairy country among the foothills of the Catskill Mountains because, while secluded - embraced by woods - it was not isolated and because it is serenely quiet!
We're pleased that our guest, a university professor seeking a retreat from family to write an important scholarly paper, like us, found that when at SunnyHill, "silence is golden."
