Secluded and Wonderful
We so enjoyed our stay in February 2020! Just as advertised this home is very private and comfortable. The porch overlooks the jungle all the way to the beach. We had Howler Monkeys pass through each morning and coati's meandering by. Dominical was fun and the surrounding beaches were beautiful. There is a private reserve called Hacienda Baru within minutes of the home that was absolutely fantastic. Sloths, agoutis, toucans, manakins, and a memorable experience walking the pathways with a troop of polite and fascinating White-faced Capuchin monkeys joining us for a long stroll. It was magical. Being able to return home and enjoy a cocktail on the deck with more wildlife watching in stunning scenery just topped it all off. Barry, the owner was fantastic offering us all sorts of information on the local scene and options before we arrived which allowed for planning, and met all our expectations. The pool was great and a welcome relief from the heat. Overall, just a wonderful stay and we highly recommend this house for a true Costa Rican experience!
Hi Tara, Thanks very much for the kind comments regarding your stay at Villa Helena. Our location is so great for encouraging wildlife as you experienced to come right up through the gardens and past the balcony and pool. There really isn't a bad viewing spot in the place and we're glad you had such good sightings. And good for you for experiencing Hacienda Baru, too. That place is such a great resource for learning about the rainforest and all the creatures that live there, including the plants and trees. Let us know when you're able to return! Pura vida y hasta luego, Barry
Lovely home with a stunning view! Location is great. We saw monkeys from the balcony. Would highly recommend!
Lovely property. A view, a pool and complete privacy
We had a great time at Villa Helena. It was such a peaceful and beautiful place. Amazing wildlife right on the property. White faced monkeys, howler monkeys, beautiful birds including toucans and macaws, tons of butterflies and hummingbirds. Going out on the deck for morning coffee was so peaceful with a great view of the ocean (you can see Cano Island) and lush jungle all around. The cicadas were out in full force so it got a bit noisy during the day but the nights were were very quiet and comfortable. Great for sleeping. The road up to the house is a little rough so 4 wheel drive is a must but well worth the bumpy ride once you arrive. The pool was beautiful and very private, so refreshing during the heat of the day. The villa had all the necessary amenities including a washer and dryer so when we come back next year we will pack a little lighter. I highly recommend this place. I can’t say enough about the beauty of Villa Helena.
Thanks very much for the lovely review, Ken. It is fantastic so see those majestic scarlet macaws flying around our area, isn't it?! Let alone the toucans and butterflies you saw and all the monkeys coming through every day. I can just about feel the cool plunge into the pool, coming up to the side of the pool and looking over the edge to look over the rainforest and the Pacific Ocean beyond. I better block out a little time for us, too! Thanks for taking the time to submit a review: we'll look forward to your return visit! Pura vida, Barry
She said yes!
The place was absolutely incredible and photos don't do it justice. Completely private and off the beaten path. We wish we had booked to stay longer. Barry, Ann-Marie, and Kevin were fantastic. They gave us plenty of information, were quick to respond to our questions, and were extremely friendly and helpful. We loved watching the sun rises and sunsets from the deck and the pool. We saw plenty of wildlife including: chestnut-mandibled toucans, howler monkeys, montezuma oropendolas, black vultures, and more.
One morning during our stay at this romantic hideaway I got down on one knee and my life changed forever.
We will always remember our time here and hope to one day come back to this blissful villa.
Hi Brad and Stacey, Thanks so much for taking the time to review your stay at Villa Helena. We try to put an accurate description of the house on our site but it really helps future guests to see that the house is as good or better than we say! You saw some great animals it sounds like. Every time we go down, we see new birds, butterflies, mammals, and reptiles. It makes it so much fun and so enjoyable to come back time and again. Congratulations on your engagement: what a nice place to pop the question. Pura vida to you, Barry
Perfectly rustic mountain cabin in the jungle.
We've just returned from eight nights at Villa Helena. If you are seeking seclusion and privacy in a jungle with a killer view, this place is for you. Barry was efficient and helpful during the booking process. Anne Marie was thorough and very friendly to work with. We woke up every morning to the howler monkeys and a symphony of birds and other animals. The pool was refreshing and we never once missed an air conditioner or TV. Often, we wouldn't even play music as the jungles sounds were just wonderful to hear. Towels and bed linens were fresh and in great condition, kitchen is well equipped- make sure to buy coffee on your way in so you can enjoy a cup your first morning on the patio. Overall, it was the escape we had hoped for. Enjoy!
Hola Paula, Thanks for the rave review of our little slice of paradise. I'm glad it met (and sounds like exceeded) your expectations. That early morning fresh coffee is a daily ritual for us when we visit, too, enjoying it on both the pool patios and the balcony. What a great way to wake up in paradise. Come back anytime! Pura vida, Barry

About Barry Foster
We stumbled across this piece of paradise by accident and are we ever glad that we did! We come from the cool Pacific Northwest where we lead pretty fast-paced lives but do enjoy gardening and bird watching. Villa Helena lets us have a totally relaxing break, full of privacy. Being at Villa Helena has really deepened our gardening and birding horizons. Every time we go down, we find a new adventure: a new horseback ride, a new guided rainforest tour, a chocolate making class, new birding guides to try, another part of a beach to explore. Every time we come down, too, there is a new restaurant to try: local cuisine, fusion, Italian, French style, Indonesian, Spanish tapa bar, sushi: all low key, casual, open air (under a high roof) restaurants.

Why Barry Foster chose Dominical
We knew we wanted something very private yet not totally isolated. We have great neighbors at Villa Helena but the properties are large so we don't look onto anyone and no one sees us. We thought about an ocean-side location but decided to be up on the hill. This decision gave us a great view, the wonderful gentle breezes, lots more privacy and really great access to all the birds, butterflies, monkeys, sloths, etc that we get such great enjoyment from watching. From our balcony, we've even watched a mother humpback whale and her baby in the ocean below and several times have watched the whales breaching. We love being close to all the services of a couple of small towns but didn't want to be right in the midst of them. This part of Costa Rica is unique in that it has great, uncrowded beaches and also has the lushness of the tropical rainforest which the more touristy areas of the north lack. This really has turned out to be Paradise.
What makes this House unique
Villa Helena really is such a wonderful experience. There are so many places to wander through the gardens and stream bed where you can sit or stand and watch all the wildlife around you and enjoy plants you might not normally see on a daily basis. We have a couple of fruit trees which are full of bromeliads, ferns and four types of native orchids. The birds and the monkeys eat most of the fruit that grows here: mangos, guava, bananas, starfruit, cashews and they'll even eat the sour oranges! That's fine because we enjoy having the animals up so close and there are great sources of local fruit so close to us. Our mature garden really sets us apart from most other rentals in the area. Everything is so close at hand to us at Villa Helena and yet we are still very private and close to nature. We can walk to a nearby restaurant and drive a few minutes to all the services of the neighboring two small towns. The closest beach is just ten minutes away by car. There are such great restaurants so close, serving local fare and all sorts of others. How do they serve such great international food in the middle of the jungle?
