House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible Bed, 2 Baths (Sleeps 6)
About Sean McCormack
Sean grew up in the area, skiing every weekend at Purgatory, and graduating from Durango High School before leaving to experience life outside this rural community. After 25 years, he and Leslie decided to move back to the mountains of Southwest Colorado to be close to family and all of the outdoor activities they enjoy.
Sean McCormack purchased this House in 2007
Why Sean McCormack chose Columbine Lake
This area is the Saudi Arabia of solar energy, with plenty of water and lots of trees. It is easy to build a comfortable and highly sustainable life here. All of the houses, barns, and greenhouses were built using wood harvested from the property. The 27' x 110' greenhouse provides fruits and vegetables not only for Sean and Leslie, but for a number of other families in the area. Standing dead trees are harvested and provide a backup heat source for all the homes and buildings, with an additional 120 cords of wood harvested for sale, providing a carbon neutral source of heat. The trees are harvested primarily to improve the health of the forest.
What makes this House unique
There is nothing better than cozying up to a real wood fire after a full day of skiing, watching the snow fall during the winter, or lounging on the covered deck and watching the sun disappear over the mountains during the summer. The kids will have a great time exploring the forest, fishing in the nearby creeks or lake, biking, horseback riding or the many other activities close by.

We truly enjoyed our stay, start to finish. The property was as described and more. The owner is so nice, he checked in on us when we arrived and stopped in to tell us good bye as we were leaving! We will definitely be back to stay in the future.
Thank you Sean!
Bubba and Kathy,
I really enjoyed meeting you both. Looking forward to catching up when you visit next😀. Thanks for doing such a great job cleaning the house before you left. You have made Diane, the gal that cleans the house, very happy.
Taste of Heaven
The pictures do not do the property justice. This was a fabulous location and very peaceful. We had such a wonderful time exploring the area again and enjoying the fall colors. Sean checked in on us to make sure we were OK and brought firewood. Excellent place to stay and super clean. Thanks so much for sharing your cabin Sean. I hope everyone in the area appreciates how lucky they are to live in God's backyard.
What a great last line in your review. I lived in the area and went to high school in Durango, and didn’t appreciate it until I left. It is truly spectacular here, and I’m glad you feel the same. Great to meet you all, including your pup. Thanks for visiting.
We would stay for a month if we could
The house is very comfortable, clean, modern and uncluttered. We enjoy sitting out on the porch watching the hummingbirds at the end of a day hiking with our dog. Sean is a great host- try to spend some time with him as he is always up to something interesting. When we leave are always thinking of when we can come back.
Bob, Barbara, and Moose,
Every summer, it is great to see you all! The day after you left, we had two moose in our yard at the top of the hill. A young male and female, I'd guess both are about three years old. It is only the second time I've seen moose, other than your yellow lab, on the property. I'm gonna text pictures. Wish you all could have stayed longer. It sure is nice and cool up here ;-).
Beautiful Location with Limited Views During Summer Months
This is a beautiful spot, mostly nestled in nature and not far from Purgatory. There are not expansive views during our stay, because the foliage is thick. Still beautiful, but not big, open views. I think another reviewer mentioned the lack of screens on the windows. The evenings cool off and are beautiful...but you can't enjoy that coolness because there are lots of hungry mosquitoes. Still, overall, we enjoyed the place which is in good condition and a nice location.
The windows are Pella triple pane with internal blinds and roll down screens. The screens roll up when the windows are closed, so they don’t interfere with the views. If you want to open the windows, no problem. Pull down the roll down screen, which travel in a track on both sides, and snap in place at the bottom, which causes the screen to completely seal on all four sides, preventing all insects from getting through. It is the best of all worlds. The internal shades in the bedrooms are blackout, allowing you to sleep while the sun is out, or there is a full moon. The shades in the great room allow light to pass, while providing privacy.
Because the house is passive solar, the trees to the south have been removed to allow the sun to shine in while the blinds are down, and the wall of glass overlooks a beautiful wildflower meadow, in addition to the Hermosa Cliffs to the west.
If your family had arrived before dark, or stayed more than just the one night, you’d be aware of the inaccuracy of your comments.
All that said, thanks for visiting. I hope your family enjoyed the rest of your tour through Colorado.
Property was very clean and if you like quiet, this is the place to be! Thanks Sean and Leslie for the use of your home and we hope to be back!
We love the peace and quiet. Hope you do too. Thanks for visiting. It was great to meet you both.
Beautiful property to unwind and relax
This has been our second time to the property and we can't wait to come back soon! The cabin is on a beautiful property with great paths to explore and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and lakes. The cabin is very comfortable and has a well equipped kitchen. We enjoyed sitting both on the front porch and inside the cabin by a warm fire reading and playing games. The property is at a great location: Close to Purgatory Resort and half way between Durango and Silverton, so sightseeing in both directions is very easy. There are also lots of lakes and trails close by for hiking and fishing, which we enjoyed very much. Sean is a great host and extremely knowledgeable of the entire area. Thank you, Sean, for showing us around and answering all our questions!
We are so glad you came back for another visit. It was great to see you!
In addition to all the summer activities at Purgatory, the narrow gauge train runs between Durango and Silverton spring, summer, and fall. There is horseback riding less than 2 miles away. The nearby mountains are criss-crossed with mining roads left over from the area's rich mining history so the 4-wheeling is fantastic. During the winter months there is snowmobiling, sleigh rides, snow shoeing, ice climbing, down hill and cross country skiing.
