House, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths (Sleeps 6)
About Sean McCormack
Sean grew up in the area, skiing every weekend at Purgatory, and graduating from Durango High School before leaving to experience life outside this rural community. After 25 years, he and Leslie decided to move back to the mountains of Southwest Colorado to be close to family and all of the outdoor activities they enjoy.
Sean McCormack purchased this House in 2011
Why Sean McCormack chose Columbine Lake
This area is the Saudi Arabia of solar energy, with plenty of water and lots of trees. It is easy to build a comfortable and highly sustainable life here. All of the houses, barns, and greenhouses were built using wood harvested from the property. The 27' x 110' greenhouse provides fruits and vegetables not only for Sean and Leslie, but for a number of other families in the area. Standing dead trees are harvested and provide a backup heat source for all the homes and buildings on the property, with an additional 120 cords of wood harvested for sale, providing a carbon neutral source of heat. The trees are harvested primarily to improve the health of the forest.
What makes this House unique
There is nothing better than cozying up to a real wood fire after a full day of skiing, watching the snow fall during the winter, or lounging on the covered deck and watching the sun disappear over the mountains during the summer. The kids will have a great time exploring the forest, fishing in the nearby creeks or lake, biking, horseback riding or the many other activities close by.

Quiet place and a wonderful.porch setting! Enjoyed our stay!
Would rent again! Everything you need in the kitchen to prepare a meal. Spices were available too. Plenty of firewood!
Perfect Location and Cabin!
Nothing like staying in a gem of a cabin in the perfect location. A place you would dream about having yourself!
Owners are attentive to details and the needs of their guests.
Will be looking this place up next year for sure!
Hope you got some good ATVing in while you were here. Glad you enjoyed your stay, and thank you for writing a review!
Beautiful, clean, pet friendly house!
We loved getting up in the morning and being able to walk our dogs along the forested dirt roads. The fireplace was great and once going produced good heat (byo newspaper and matches). There is one pretty pond on the property, just inside the main entrance. Purgatory Lake is for homeowners only and not really accessible. However, Twilight lake is only about 5 min drive just across from the Purgatory ski resort. Catch and release only. Easy end-of-stay clean-up. Shampoo, conditioner, and soap provided (thanks!). We enjoyed our stay very much.
You need to come back and find all the ponds on the property. There are actually 11 of them. Four of them are easily accessed via roads. The others require exploring in the forest. It would be a fun scavenger hunt for the kids to find the 7 that are off the beaten path.
Columbine Lake along Lake Purgatory Drive is a public access lake and everyone is allowed. There is a 20' easement around the entire lake if you would like to walk around it or fish from shore. Please let me know if someone told you differently as I will follow up with them.
Glad if was a fun family getaway!
what a nice, semi secluded area to stay with your pets!
Short and sweet.
10 year anniversary
My wife and I haven't gotten to go on a real vacation in years, and our ten year wedding anniversary was in September. Side note, we also have two dogs that come with us everywhere, so finding vacation spots isn't always easy. When we found this cabin we were both so excited! Upon arrival, it already exceeded our expectations. The property is absolutely beautiful. The cabin not only feels like a home away from home but has some luxuries we don't get to enjoy at home! The fireplace was such a cozy treat on the chilly evenings. Hiking around you can find some of the most amazing vistas, including a look down on to a stunning lake, and staggering craggy mountain peaks seem to cradle you in this stunning valley. Needless to say, we can not wait to make a return trip. A big thank you to Sean and his wife for making our celebration special and one we won't forget.
Jeff and Amy,
We're glad you made the trek to the top of the hill. As you noted, the vistas are totally worth the short hike. Come on back any time. We also have a 2 bedroom, 2 bath on the property which might be a better fit for the two of you (plus pups of course).
Remote Durango cabin stay
It was a lovely setting with large pines and aspens and private. It was a little far back from the road we drove on in among narrow and windy roads but after you arrive it is worth the drive. We played a lot of cards on the large covered porch at night with the help of a large standing propane heater. A lovely place in a beautiful and private setting.
We’re glad you enjoyed our cabin with family and friends. We hope your time in Pagosa was just as pleasant! Thanks for visiting!
