House, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths (Sleeps 6)
About Sean McCormack
Sean grew up in the area, skiing every weekend at Purgatory, and graduating from Durango High School before leaving to experience life outside this rural community. After 25 years, he and Leslie decided to move back to the mountains of Southwest Colorado to be close to family and all of the outdoor activities they enjoy.
Sean McCormack purchased this House in 2011
Why Sean McCormack chose Columbine Lake
This area is the Saudi Arabia of solar energy, with plenty of water and lots of trees. It is easy to build a comfortable and highly sustainable life here. All of the houses, barns, and greenhouses were built using wood harvested from the property. The 27' x 110' greenhouse provides fruits and vegetables not only for Sean and Leslie, but for a number of other families in the area. Standing dead trees are harvested and provide a backup heat source for all the homes and buildings on the property, with an additional 120 cords of wood harvested for sale, providing a carbon neutral source of heat. The trees are harvested primarily to improve the health of the forest.
What makes this House unique
There is nothing better than cozying up to a real wood fire after a full day of skiing, watching the snow fall during the winter, or lounging on the covered deck and watching the sun disappear over the mountains during the summer. The kids will have a great time exploring the forest, fishing in the nearby creeks or lake, biking, horseback riding or the many other activities close by.

Perfect family vacation in the woods
This property was amazing and everything we were looking for to be close to nature. The house had everything we needed to have a quiet few days as a family. We traveled with our 2 children and our 2 dogs and everyone had a wonderful experience. Sean was polite and friendly. We will definitely be back and highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a secluded mountain home.
Julita, Your family was our first post pandemic visitors. Thanks for getting the ball rolling. Hope to see you all in July.
Best Stay EVER! Super relaxing!
If you want to stay in a beautiful place with amazing views and perfect amenities, then you should stay here! The house is < two miles from the Purgatory ski resort, but no hint or sound of traffic and no 30+ min drive back to Durango! (that drive seems longer after a day of skiing!)
This is a newly rebuilt house and finished like at home; beautiful cabinets, granite countertops, etc.. The bathrooms are fantastic and each room has a private bath; beds are comfy with fluffy covers to snuggle into at night. The kitchen is well equipped and has more than just-the-basics. Nice appliances as well.
If you stay in winter and expect ice/snow, then heed the notes in the description about AWD/4WD. Otherwise, I'm sure any vehicle would be fine in the summer as it is a nice dirt/gravel road all the way.
The owner was super responsive to our questions and went out of his way to make us feel welcome and ensure we had a great visit, even offering sleds to our kids so they could ride the slope in front of the property. While there we received an overnight snow of 1.5+ feet. Before we finished breakfast and tried to figure out what to do; the owner plowed the drive and made a path for us...awesome!!
We came primarily due to the proximity to the ski resort and for winter activities - snowmobiling, dog sledding, etc... However, this house would be perfect in the summer too.
We will be back!!
We loved hosting you and your family.
For anyone reading this review, the ski area closed down due to the Covid 19 Pandemic while Jeff and his family were here for spring break. Although they couldn't ski, they went dog sledding, snowmobiling, sledding, and snow shoeing while they were here instead. They still had a great time playing in the snow and avoided all the carriers in Texas while enjoying the clean mountain air.
Thanks for visiting!
Awesome mountain cabin!
This was a great stay. The owner is super helpful and the property was very nice. Having a bathroom for each bedroom was really convenient. Lots of wood right outside the back door for our nightly fire after a day on the slopes. The 4 wheel drive requirement is serious though. The drive from the main road to the cabin in the snow is beautiful!
I hope you and your family enjoyed our winter wonderland, had a great visit with your friends in Santa Fe, and made it safely back home. Thanks for visiting.
In love for life!
We knew this place would be cool when we booked it, but had no idea it would capture our hearts for life! The secluded nature/beauty of the property was breathtaking, and the cabin itself was perfect for our (large) family. We stayed in the winter to ski, and are already looking at dates to come back in the Summer to enjoy the lake and other non-winter activities the area has to offer. The property owners were a delight to work with from start to finish. Great communication, and above and beyond hosts. Sean even set some sleds out for the kids and made a little sledding hill with his snowmobile! Can't wait to go back. Do yourself a favor and make staying here a priority! You won't regret it!
Pre-white Christmas Vacation
The location of the property was gorgeous and private. Beautiful scenery.
