Grace Gifford was born in Dublin in March 1888.
In 1915 Grace began a courtship with Joseph Plunkett and they planned to marry. Unknown to Grace, Joseph was a founder of the Irish Volunteers who were planning a rebellion in Dublin seeking independence for Ireland.
By the end of Easter Week April 1916 the Irish rebels had surrendered and were first held in Richmond Barracks and then imprisoned in Kilmainham Gaol. The leaders were condemned to death by firing squad. When Joseph learned that his execution was scheduled to take place, he sought permission to be married. On the 3rd May 1916 at 6.00pm Grace Gifford entered Kilmainham Gaol. With a priest and two witnesses present she married Joseph. One can visit the chapel in Kilmainham Gaol where they were wed. Joseph Plunkett was executed the following day.
