About Tony Blakley
Vivien & Tony welcome you to Riverside. We have live here for 25 years - watching our three children grow up and fly the nest! We are a retired couple enjoying our time together in the heart of Kent. Riverside Cottage has been a dream to develop as we enjoy meeting people and making their stay an enjoyable one.

Why Tony Blakley chose Mersham
This stunning self-catering holiday cottage is a short drive from the historic City of Canterbury (around 25 mins) which boasts a wealth of visitor attractions. In 1170 Archbishop Thomas Beckett was famously murdered in the Cathedral and thousands of Pilgrims play homage each year. The ancient ruins of St Augustine's Abbey and St Martin's Church all form part of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nearby are the remains of a Norman Castle built on 1080 by the Normans and the large stone keep was largely constructed in the reign of Henry1 (1100-1135) all are reminders of the City's history, heritage & culture. Other attractions include, The King's mile, St Dunstan's, West Gate Towers, Northgate and The Canterbury Tales. You can take one of the River Tours and absorb the City with a boat trip along the River Stour taking in the architecture and scenic views. There are museums, walking trails or guided walks to help you enjoy the narrow winding lanes. Canterbury is best explored by foot. Canterbury is a place steeped in tradition and is also a modern and vibrant city with welcoming bars, pubs, nightclubs, fine restaurants, and a High Street with independent and high street names. Canterbury Golf Course is 1 mile distance from the City Centre and was designed by Henry Colt ain 1927 at the same time as designing Wentworth. There are two famous “links” courses at nearby Sandwich, Royal St Georges (home to The Open Championship in 2011) and Princes (Open Golf qualifying course).
What makes this Cottage unique
The evening can be spent watching the sunset from the lounge or if warm enough - from the sun loungers on the private patio. With panoramic views across the fields - almost as far as Ashford in the distance. And if you are lucky to spend the Autumn at Riverside you will be amazed at the fields full of Pumpkins or Rape seed oil plants.

Really lovely hideaway in rural Kent
Dear Vivien and Tony,
Thanks so much for a lovely week at your peaceful and comfortable cottage. A lovely location for exploring the area (lots to see and visit in the area - eg Dover, Hythe, Rye and Canterbury, and a number of very interesting Historic Houses and Castles within easy travelling distance). And a really lovely cottage to return to in the evenings. Beautiful views over open countryside, really peaceful and relaxing. Couldn't have asked for more! (Even the weather was excellent for our visit). and your lovely cat was friendly, welcoming and had us trained within a day!!
Thanks again for a really enjoyable week!

The cottage was immaculate, perfect for a couple, and offered every convenience we needed. We absolutely loved the location in Mersham with its beautiful views. The extra touches like the "rain" shower and vanity table/seat were a plus. Tony was very responsive both before and during our stay. In the area, we recommend Farrier Arms, a historic pub just down the street, where we enjoyed some delicious dinners. We hope to return and stay at Riverside Cottage again!

Easy to book online, lovely place for 2. Great views from the cottage.
Lovely 2 night stay
The cottage was very cosy, comfortable and well equipped; just what we needed to help celebrate our 17th Wedding Anniversary. We really enjoyed the views and the quiet location. The pub just across the road was very nice, friendly and lovely food. We would definitely recommend to all friends & family for a short break.
Many thanks for your review Victoria.

Peaceful location. Beautiful Sunsets
Tony was a pleasure to interact with before and during our stay. The cottage was spacious and comfortable. It was also well outfitted with supplies. Great little village with walking trails and pub that brews their own beer nearby. The cottage was also conveniently located and easy to get out and about each day.
Many thanks for your review.

Riverside Cottage is set deep in the heart of the Kent but is only 10 minutes from Ashford International station with its high speed javelin trains to London (St Pancras in 37 minutes) and Eurostar trains to Paris and Brussels. It is also just 10 minutes from both J9 and J10 of the M20. The channel tunnel is only 20 mins away and you take your car to France for food and wine.
Rolling farmland spreads down to Romney Marsh and the sea. This is a wonderful area to walk, run or ride bicycles. Wildlife abounds including deer in the woods, nightingales in spring, bats and owls in the evenings.
The area has a stark beauty of its own, and also has unique wildlife, which is visible at the Nature reserves at Rye Harbour and Dungeness. The area around Littlestone is steeped in history which includes Dover Castle: Discover its labyrinth of secret wartime tunnels built deep in the White Cliffs of Dover. Kent Battle of Britain Museum: The most important collection of battle of britain artefacts on show in the country. It has its own unique steam railway the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway which runs along the coast. This narrow gauge miniature railway is a great attraction for visitors. The coast provides the best sandy beaches in the South East of the country, with shallow water allowing safe access for children.
Mersham is often referred to as one of Kent’s best kept secrets. Quiet and peaceful, yet only 20 minutes drive to Hythe and Camber Sands. The historic town of Rye is just 30 minutes away. Littlestone has easy access to all amenities, with many excellent restaurants in New Romney and Hythe for eating out.
Riverside is a private ground floor one bedroom cottage, lovely village setting with village shop ,great pubs and pub food a short walk away (The Farriers Arms (built in 1600) has its own micro-brewery - try the '1606' bitter!). Access to the main river and garden is by arrangement with the owner's permission - Individuals must possess a rod licence.
