The cooler Kuta
Never to be confused with its boisterous brother of the same name over on Bali, this Kuta hides in a wide bay of gold-flecked sand, down between the rugged, jungle-topped cliffs that spill into the Indian Ocean from the southern coast of Lombok. You can sleep in thatch-roofed cabanas in the surrounding mountains or wake to the salt-spray with a beachside Lombok vacation rental on the coast. Once you're up, it's all about joining the long-haired wave riders in search of the fabled reef breaks of Lombok, lazing on beaches, hopping between local warung kitchens and just enjoying the tropical vibes.
Kuta – rip up the guidebook
Nobody has time for guidebooks in Kuta. Forget reading about the best beaches and coves and head out to find them for yourself. That's what makes a stay on this handsome run of jungle-edged and rock-ribbed coastline so much fun. Of course, there's Kuta's own bay, a glimmering horseshoe of beige sand. Then there's postcard-perfect Mawan, encased in a bowl of bald-topped mountains and washed by a sea of cobalt blue. There's also Selong Blanak, a place to recline under sea grapes and sip a cold coconut while the surf rolls in.
Kuta is waves and wave-washed beaches
More than anything, Kuta vacation rentals are your ticket to the gorgeous south coast of Lombok island. It's one of the more off-the-beaten-track runs of shoreline in this popular archipelago, home to hidden inlets, where monkeys cling to sea pineapples, and wide bays that have roaring Indian Ocean surf. Feeling adventurous? You could rent your own board and head out to rip the curl – they say the local fishermen are the best guides to the surf. Prefer lazing? That's easy. You can hop between the beaches or simply kick back in one of those Kuta vacation rentals with a pool.
Kuta is dry and wet, but always excellent
Kuta might officially have the same dry and wet seasons as its near neighbor, Bali, but the unique climactic conditions here mean that there are far fewer rains, overall. The upshot is that you might catch some showers during the rainy months, between October and March, just that they're never usually enough to stop you hitting the beaches and swimming in the seas. May to August is the time when most travelers seek out Kuta vacation rentals – the weather's dry, scorching and sunny.
Kuta means cliffs, beaches, peaks and waves
Kuta is hidden in a wide, horseshoe bay on the far southern side of Lombok island. Its sand, an enticing shade of muted yellow, slopes down softly into the Indian Ocean between rugged cliffs, atop which jungle is draped like curtains, on high. You can head out to the west to discover some lovely, deserted and secluded beaches, from powdery Mawan to Caribbean-esque Selong Blanak. A ring of reefs out at sea means there's usually not too many waves along the shore – the surfers head to them with help from local boat drivers.
