Its climate is tempered by the Atlantic Ocean and in 2012, the town was struck hard by Hurricane Sandy, which caused widespread destruction. However, in response, the town has made a triumphant recovery, with the reconstructed boardwalk attracting many visitors wishing for a quiet and relaxing retreat or a family-friendly vacation.

Long Beach—a protective barrier island

The city of Long Beach is situated on a barrier island off the New Jersey coast. As such, it bore the brunt of Hurricane Sandy in 2012, protecting the towns of Long Island New Jersey. It is an attractive city with many beautiful old beach-front houses from the early 1900s. At the end of the subtropical climate zone, it allows for the growth of warmer climate plants such as mimosa, crape myrtle and magnolia, usually only found further south. The first inhabitants of the island were the Rockaway Indians who sold it to Dutch colonists in 1643.

The nearest airport is in John F. Kennedy Intl. Airport (JFK), located 7.6 mi (12.2 km) from the city center. If you can't find a flight that works for your travel itinerary, you could book a flight to Newark Liberty Intl. Airport (EWR), which is 28.1 mi (45.3 km) away.
